Well if i'm not mistaken, FTA satellite is unencrypted but mpeg-2 encoded.  I think most of the Satellite PC cards (http://www.dvb-cards.com/specs1020.html) just output MPEG-2, so MythTV or Media center should be able to use them like normal video inputs from a camera or tv tuner card.

I've got an old Direct TV dish available to me.  I'll have to check to see if it's k or c band, but I assume it's one or the other, and I could leverage it to pull down some FTA.  Are there many things to recieve in the US? I thought it was bigger in eastern europe/asia.

Ok, I asked a knowledgable buddy (shall remain nameless) and here is what he says about available content:

Yes. ALL of Dish Network and more! Basically everything but DirectTV. You simply load firmware which decrypts everything. It is SOOOOO much easier than card testing. You will get about 600 standard definition channels with a Dish 500 antenna setup (pointing at two satellites). Legacy Dish/Dish 500 antennas are best, Dish Pro antennas are ok, and Dish Pro + probably draw too much power. HD is still in the works and partially up on some of the new HD FTA receivers. However, Dish has (somehow) patented a 8VSB modulation (which is a standard video modulation scheme), so you have to add in an 8VSB tuner to the HD FTA receiver to get Dish HD. There are few HD receivers right now so prices are VERY expensive for HD. Also the firmware is fairly buggy on these. The HD receivers will work for BeV (Canadian version of Dish Network) because they are not using 8VSB. I recommend the Viewsat Xtreme or Ultra receivers. Be VERY careful if you buy that you do not get a clone! http://www.viewsatusa.com/products.htm

    Re: free-to-air-satellite?

Ok so I have Dish Network here and Vista Ultimate and I've been looking for a solution to get Dish into VMC (Vista Media Center) without using the STB (Set-Top Box). I've been reading that DirecTV has been working directly with Microsoft to develop an add-on card that does exactly what I want but they haven't been releasing any details of when this will happen despite the fact that they were demoed at some show quite a while ago. And I've read nothing about Dish doing anything similar... So I'm wondering if these cards will let me use VMC as a replacement for the STB? I'm sure I could set up a system with an IR "blaster" or whatever but that's not really fully integrated. Do you guys have any experience with these cards? Does the Guide and Channel Lineup in VMC actually work or do you have to "tune" with the software that ships with the card? I honestly don't care too much about stuff like HBO, just local channels and maybe Sci-Fi/USA. Also my Dish STB didn't come with a CAM or SmartCard or anything, the installer guy said they don't use them anymore and they were bascially integrated into the STB.

As of right now, I think the only (legal) way to do this, is to integrate with your STB.  In a lot of cases you can really make the integration pretty good, using serial connection instead of IR, or in some cases firewire.

Write to your congressman and tell them your upset with the disgrace that's been made of cablecard, and tired of the media providers disobeying FCC regulations and federal fair-use rights laid out in the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.  The FCC did, after all, order all these companies to make available a standardized method of accessing their content without using the STB.

You can also likely get alot of these channels OTA with a Sat card, but it's more along the lines of illegitimately decrypting the data I think.  And under current laws purchased from our congressmen by the media companies, any act of decrypting material is illegal.

    So that's a "no" then?
